Your Day Off Work in Cancun – Crococun Zoo
Are you planning what to do on your day off work in Cancun? If you are, then you should make sure that you visit the Crococun Zoo. There are so many things to see and do in Cancun, but the Crococun Zoo is a great place to take the entire family.
Crococun Zoo
The zoo was first established in 1982 and it is just twenty miles south of Cancun. The zoo rescues animals from the area and there is quite an impressive collection of exotic animals here that you can see close up. You will see white-tailed deer, snakes, crocodiles, macaws, turtles, and Mexican hairless dogs, known as Xoloitzcuintli (said sholosquinckly).
Resident Crocodiles
There are so many things to see and do at the Crococun Zoo, but one of the popular things to do is walking with the resident crocodiles. A guided tour will take you through the zoo and the adventure will start off with having your picture taken with one of the beautiful and vibrant parrots or macaws sitting on your shoulder, then the tour will take you along paths through the zoo, which takes around an hour or so. The guided tour will allow you to pet and hold many of the zoo’s animals and you can even feed them too. The beautiful paths take you through the zoo where you will see lush vegetation.
The tour will continue to the area where the crocodiles bask. These magnificent creatures vary in age and size. The baby crocodiles like to swim in the ponds while the large massive crocodiles just enjoy lazing in the sun. The tour guide, who is also bilingual, will inform you about the history of the zoo, take you to meet all the resident animals and tell you their names, then you can choose one of the smaller crocodiles to hold and have your picture taken.
Local Spider Monkeys
The local spider monkeys are also a highlight at this zoo. They live in tree canopies high above, but they are able to do whatever they please as they are not in cages. Many visitors will hear and spot the spider monkeys as soon as they arrive. When you first enter the zoo you can purchase banana pieces to feed to the spider monkeys, and your tour guide will show you how to do just that. The banana treats will be placed into baskets that hang from the trees, then the spider monkeys pull the baskets up with the ropes to get their treats. The spider monkeys are so smart that they know to lower the baskets down when they are empty in hopes of getting more banana treats again.
The Protected White-Tailed Deer
The white-tailed deer is another specialty at the zoo. They are located in a very large fenced off area at the zoo. Although the population of white-tailed deer was once widespread in the south eastern areas of Mexico, they are now endangered due to aggressive hunting that has threatened the species for many centuries. Careful reproductive programs are overseen by the veterinarians on staff at the zoo.
Gift and Coffee Shop
The gift and coffee shops are new additions to the Crococun zoo, and they both are big hits. Visitors can stop by the coffee shop and grab an espresso, then shop at the gift shop to buy a keepsake to remember the fun and exciting time you spent at the zoo.
