  • Getting to Know Cancun

There are two main areas within Cancun: the “island” where you will find the majority of resorts and hotels, and the mainland that includes the downtown areas as well as the city’s residential areas.

The Hotel Zone on the Island

This area is, as the name suggests, home to most of Cancun’s big Five Star hotels and resorts, but it is also great for dining, entertainment and bars, with some good shopping malls (which tend to be more expensive than those downtown). You will also find the El Rey Mayan archeological site here and a museum.

    Cancun Mainland

This area of Cancun also features some smaller hotels and is full of restaurants, bars and markets that are less expensive than the hotel zone. Yaxchilan Avenue is popular for a night out and dining while Parque Las Palapas is great for weekend festivals, music, craft fairs and local cuisine.

    Playa Mujeres and Puerto Juarez

The privileged area of Playa Mujeres is home to Villa del Palmar Cancun Luxury Beach Resort & Spa as well as other exclusive hotels. One of the best golf courses in Cancun is located here, Playa Mujeres Golf Course, and there are some Mayan ruins to explore here called, El Meco. The ferry to Isla Mujeres leaves from Puerto Juarez, just five minutes from Playa Mujeres.

  • Currency

The Mexican Peso ($ __MNX) is the local currency used in Cancun, although dollars are widely accepted. At the time of writing this (August 2023), you can expect to receive between 16.30 to 17.70 pesos for each dollar.
