Healthcare
Staying healthy when moving to Cancun for work
Having appropriate health insurance for you and your family is particularly important when moving to Cancun for work. It may be that for the first couple of months when you relocate to Mexico, you purchase travel insurance that covers your medical care while you are in Mexico until you are established and ready to invest in private Mexican health insurance or register with the social security health cover when you become a resident in Mexico.
IMMS
If you become a resident in Mexico and are working, you will have access to Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMMS), which is basic health cover. For between $300 and $600 a year, you are covered for hospital care, surgeries, prescription medication etc. It is important to note that this system serves large numbers of people and may not be able to provide all the services you come to need.
Private Healthcare
Mexico has a number of excellent private health insurance packages that are valid within the best private hospitals in Mexico. Private healthcare in Mexico is much more affordable than it is back home. Likewise, if you do not wish to get medical insurance you can pay to visit private clinics. For general ailments, you can visit a doctor for as little as $3 dollars at various Mexican pharmacy chains.
